Minority Clinical Fellowships, HIV Medicine Association – USA
The main objective of the HIV Medicine Association Minority Clinical Fellowship is to enable underrepresented minority physicians in residence after winning HIV clinical experience and expertise in the clinical setting of HIV. The program’s goal is to increase the number of minority physicians with experience and commitment to providing clinical care to HIV-positive patients from minority communities.
Two scholarships will be awarded to an African-American and Latino MD or DO-applicant with a demonstrated interest in HIV medicine, who have completed their residencies before the start of the fellowship, or are in the first five years of medical practice. Those currently in clinical practice are expected to spend at least 50 percent of their time in clinical care and clinical education associated with the Community.
Eligibility
Applicants must be African-American or Latino descent and has demonstrated interest in HIV medicine. Applicants must be legal U.S. residents and demonstrate intent to establish his practice in the areas of the U.S. with large minority populations.
Applicants must have completed their residencies before the start of the fellowship or be within the first five years of clinical practice and may board.
Eligible candidates must not have completed, be enrolled in or accepted into a fellowship program identification.
Criteria
Candidates must identify the HIV clinical program is linked with an academic institution where he spent most of his time engaged in HIV clinical care.
Candidates should have the opportunity to drive continuously for at least 30 HIV patients during their clinical training experience in both inpatient and outpatient.
The sponsoring institutions must have a proper census of patients with HIV to ensure adequate clinical experience. clinical settings with large minority patient populations are required.
Fellows may choose to take up to 2 months of her fellowship at another institution approved or in clinical practice to complement clinical experience.
Applicants must identify a mentor to oversee their clinical experience. Mentors must be HIVMA members.
Applicants may select the mentor and institution of their own choosing, and a list of clinical sites with the capacity to accommodate a candidate will be provided.In order to strengthen your application, applicants without mentors/sponsoring institutions are strongly encouraged to contact HIVMA before submitting your application so that you can be matched with an HIVMA member in your area.
Funding
Two fellowships of up to $60,000 plus fringe benefits for one year will be awarded to the chosen candidates through the sponsoring institutions. Chosen candidates will receive fringe benefits commensurate with those enjoyed by staff of similar rank at the sponsoring institution.
Additionally, fellows will receive a one-year membership to HIVMA and free registration and travel support for the IDSA Annual Meeting, where fellowship winners will be announced. Mentors from sponsoring institutions will receive $10,000.
Reporting Requirements
All fellows will be required to submit a self-report at the close of the fellowship that includes any publications and/or abstract presentations produced as a result of the fellowship, as well as an end-of-year budget report.
