Gastroenterology / Hepatology Fellowship Program is designed to provide training for a career either in clinical or academic gastroenterology. There are currently two vacancies available each year in this three years, covering MetroHealth Medical Center, and some selected rotations at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
During the three years of grants, a total of at least 12 months is available for conducting research and electives. The remainder of the grant is spent in gaining experience in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at the two institutions.
Fellows receive extensive training and experience in performing diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde pancreatography.
Two outpatient clinics a week are held in the Fellows follow patients for the duration of the scholarship under the supervision of physicians. Conferences are held periodically as radiology, pathology, club magazine, the core of conferences and research issues (a total of three hours per week).
Furthermore, the teaching of consultation rounds are held daily.
From the Division of Gastroenterology provides consultation services to the Department of Internal Medicine and other hospital departments, scholars have independent interactions of consultation with residents and medical students before full rounds of consultation with the attending gastroenterologist.
In this way, independent advisory responsibilities, foster cognitive. Continuity Clinic (twice a week at MetroHealth) will allow scholars to follow their patients throughout their fellowship.
The Specialty Clinic is always involve multiple consultant gastroenterologists.
Research experience is gained usually in two types of settings:
- Clinical research encompassing areas of interest to the gastroenterology division including the following: Hepatitis C, health care delivery issues, fatty liver, and complications of liver disease.
- Basic research areas of interest are: intermediate metabolism in liver disease, body composition measurement, pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy, hormonal nutritional and metabolic alterations in liver disease, mechanisms of Hepatitis C, fat and alcohol liver injury and treatment of viral hepatitis.
However, fellows can perform research in other areas of special interest in gastroenterology. The fellowship is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and enjoys a national reputation for productivity and excellence.
Fellows receive four weeks of vacation in addition to four floating holidays. Health, life, dental, malpractice and vision care insurance are included in the benefit package.
Uniforms and recreational facilities are available free of charge. Close-in parking is available at a nominal charge. Automatic banking is available in the hospital.
Medical health and counseling services are available from staff physicians. Salary for the 2010-2011 academic year are $52,100 for a PGY4 fellow.
