PhD Studentship Development of Pure Shift Proton NMR Techniques

PhD Studentship – Development of Pure Shift Proton NMR Techniques
The University of Manchester

Supervisors: Prof GA Morris and Dr LM Nilsson
Start Date: 20 September 2010
Closing date for applications: 27 August 2010

The project:

A PhD studentship funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council is available in the research group of Prof Gareth Morris and Dr Mathias Nilsson in the School of Chemistry. The project will investigate new ways of measuring “pure shift” NMR spectra, in which multiplet structure is suppressed in order to avoid signal overlap and to improve resolution (see e.g. Angewandte Chemie, International Edition, 49, 3901 (2010)). Such methods have the potential to deliver very big improvements in spectral resolution, and if successful the project is likely to lead to applications in a wide range of fields; previous NMR techniques developed in the group are now used world-wide.

Applicants should have a strong interest in NMR spectroscopy and a sound background in physical chemistry or physics. The project will involve experimental work using the School of Chemistry’s 10 superconducting NMR spectrometers, NMR theory, computer programming and data analysis.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have or expect a good (I or II(i)) honours degree (or an equivalent degree) in Chemistry or Physics.

Funding:

Standard EPSRC funding rate for 42 months. The studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and provide a tax-free stipend of £13,590 for 2010/11. Only UK/EU applicants are eligible.
