PhD Studentship Accelerator Physics-Germany
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) opening PhD Studentship Accelerator Physics 2010 is the result of the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the Research Center, Karlsruhe. It is a unique institution in Germany, which combines the mission of a university with that of a large-scale research center of the Helmholtz Association. With 8000 employees and an annual budget of EUR 650 million, KIT is one of the largest research and education institutions worldwide.
The Laboratory for Applications of Synchrotron-radiation (LAS) at KIT has an open
PhD position in the area of physics
KIT/LAS together with the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena are investigating the use of ultra-short electron pulses produced by Laser Wakefield Accelerators for the generation of Terahertz- and X-ray radiation. The suitable candidate will investigate the beam dynamics and synchrotron emission of these short pulses in advanced non-standard undulators.
Your tasks:
• Collaboration in a joint project of KIT/LAS and the University of Jena.
• Development of a complete theoretical model of the interactions between a laterally inhomogeneous undulator-field and the electron beam.
• This model will enable the calculation of the emitted synchrotron spectrum and will, reversely, allow to determine the beam parameters from a measured spectrum.
Your profile:
• A graduate degree (master or diploma) in physics, mathematics or computer science
• Solid knowledge of electrodynamics is expected
• Programming skills are required
• Strong interest in accelerator physics
• A high motivation and the ability to work independently
• Willingness to travel and to present results of the work at international conferences.
The position is limited to three years (two years plus one year extension) and is available from September 1st, 2010. The salary grade is TV-L E 13 (50%).
KIT is pursuing a gender equality policy. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. If qualified, handicapped applicants will be preferred.
Please forward your application including all relevant information (curriculum vitae, letters of reference, etc.) until September 1st 2010 to:
