Indigenous Music Scholarship from One Movement
New Scholarships-It has always been an aim of the One Movement partners to ensure that real benefits to Australian artists and in particular, Indigenous artists, are realised through the hosting of One Movement for Music Perth (OMFM) in Australian Scholarships.
As part of this commitment to fostering new talent OMFM founded the Australian Indigenous Music Scholarship (AIMS) in 2009, a program focused on professional development opportunities for Australian Indigenous artists. The scholarship is designed to provide an opportunity for Indigenous artists to gain high level industry experience and exposure to ultimately achieve their career objectives for scholarships.AIMS is a pioneering partnership between OMFM, Skinnyfish Music and MGM Distribution, and is supported by the Victorian, Queensland and South Australian state governments, through their corresponding Arts Departments via direct support of participating artists.
The scholarship has a strong focus on career and skill development and provides exposure and assistance to ensure that the artists are not limited to being categorised as only Indigenous artists but also provided with mainstream music exposure and mentoring. As such, the AIMS program was specifically developed to provide participants with the necessary industry skills, experience and exposure to ensure that they are able to maximise the likelihood of long term sustainability in the music industry.
Last year’s AIMS winner, Lee Morgan, received many development opportunities including the recording and distribution of a CD. Internationally recognised producer and musician, Kerryn Tolhurst, was secured to oversee the recording of the final CD for Lee with distribution being supported by both MGM Distribution and Skinnyfish Music. In Lee’s own words the Scholarship “has enabled me to meet many folks up the musical ladder and has put me in touch with a lot of great crew who are as dedicated and as passionate as I am about the music scene. It has given me a chance to record my new album, which as any musician knows, is always important to document the journey of one’s musical life. Thank you so much to all involved and to the creators of the AIMS Scholarship”.
Producer, Kerryn Tolhurst, said “I feel honoured to have been involved in the production of Lee’s new album, overseeing the development of the songs he presented for recording. I’m certain that Lee has gained some insights into the inner workings of songwriting through our workshops. I believe this endeavour will arm him with an album which will find commercial and critical acclaim, and furthermore create inroads to the overseas market”.
The 2010 AIMS Program once again will receive strong support from the music industry with Mark Grose (Managing Director, Skinnyfish Music ? label and manager of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu), Alan Pigram (Musician/Producer, Pigram Brothers), Rhoda Roberts (Festival Director, GARMA Festival and Creative Director, Sydney New Year’s Eve), James Ware (Creative Director, Waving At Trains) and Mark Richardson (Founder and Creative Director, Forum 5) forming the assessment panel.
OMFM is inviting indigenous artists from across Australia to apply to participate in the scholarship which will provide recipients with the opportunity to showcase at the One Movement Showcase Music Festival.
